12/9/08, To "B" or not to "B"...

I have had many requests from friends and family for "Before" and "After" videos of my B-Girl skillz. Thanks to a few spontaneous moments of inspiration (and a few momentary lapses of pride) this weekend, and having my homegirl, Kristen Dvoracek, visiting all the way from CDA with her videocamera ...your wish has been granted. And I cannot believe I'm letting you all see this.
Seriously.

Before: So here's the 3 moves I had prior to NYC. This video was taken in our Bronx apartment.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uYB_37Y1r6g

After: So Kristen and I were sitting in a quiet corner on the 3rd floor of the Time Warner Center this Sunday, eating Tasti D'Lite ice cream and watching the Xmas music light show in the main entrance of the mall. Maybe it was the ice cream sugar rush or the feel-good holiday cheer or the fact that no one was in sight, whatever it was, I felt inspired to practice a little breaking to the music. Within minutes of practicing, a security guard appeared out of nowhere and told us we could neither sit on the floor nor breakdance in the mall. Say what?? I ain't bothering nobody! So we stood up. As soon as the security guard was out of sight, Kristen leapt at the opportunity to record my breaking and defy authority. I definitely had some attitude towards the security guard, but you know, it's kinda hard to maintain that attitude when you're dancing to a symphony rendition of "Oh Come Let us Adore Him". I can't be mad at baby Jesus! :) In fact, had Kristen recorded any longer, my breaking would have turned into ballet, I'm sure of it! Anyway, here's what you get:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b1OxWZTlXZo

Okay, hope you enjoyed a laugh. In the meantime, I've got bruises from practicing!!! Seriously. No pain, no gain. And I'm lovin' it! And I'm not finished breakin' yet! There will be more videos to come, I'm sure. :)

Last friday's class with Ephrat, one of the student's moms joined us for her first time breaking!! You go mom. Speaking of which, I've been corresponding recently with Sr. Carol Ann and we have been discussing a B-Girl workshop for the nuns at St. Gertrude's Monastery in Cottonwood, ID, where Kristen and I used to spend a week out of our summers growing up. Usually we could be found catching frogs by the pond or feeding the goats up the mountain or staring at the two-headed pig in the monastery museum, and almost always sneaking ice cream out of the kitchen in the middle of the night. This time we'll be teaching the sisters how to pop, lock and drop it ;). Oh, the good ol' convent days!!

This weekend Kristen brought with her the cold weather from Idaho, along with some good Broadway luck! We saw the play "Mamma Mia!", having scored the last two SRO (standing room only) tickets for $20 each. Halfway through the show we snagged some great seats towards the front of the stage! We also attempted to RUSH tickets for the play "Wicked," which Kristen had been DYING to see. To RUSH, you show up 2 1/2 hours before the play and stand in line (in the cold) to have your name put into a lottery for 25 front row tickets. Two hours before the show they draw 13 names. We RUSHed THREE times, along with 100 other people, and had the misfortune of not being drawn all three times. Kristen had even befriended the security guard, but he wasn't able to pull strings for us. :( After the third strike of rejection, we realized it must be fate that we not go, so we headed into Rite Aid across the street for me to get some cash back on my debit card for street vendor shopping. As we headed out of Rite Aid, moving towards the Subway, a woman yelled out and caught our attention. She had an extra RUSH ticket. Her brother was stuck at a luau and would not make it. Our eyes WIDENED. We looked at each other. Kristen checked with the ticket office to see if by chance there were any regular tickets left for the afternoon show. Sure enough, someone had cancelled last minute, so there was a fabulous seat 4th row, center. Kristen bought it. I pulled out my street vendor cash and dished out the $26 for the RUSH ticket. We couldn't believe it!! We were going to see WICKED!!

All I can say is that the play was fantastic! The stage was incredible, the acting was perfect, the storyline was priceless. Watching the "Wizard of Oz" will never be the same. If Wicked happens to come to a theater near you, I recommend you go! And to top it all off, after the play it started to SNOW!!!!! It even stuck a bit, enough for me to form a snowball to throw at Kristen.

Happiness IS.
